A verse that has been on my mind an awful lot this week, and really quite a bit throughout the last year is 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God has not given us a spirit of cowardice, but of power and love and self-discipline.” I was afforded the opportunity this week to discuss my path and testimony a little bit at Bible/book study. Our study group is reading “No Reason to Hide” by Erwin Lutzer. This week was week three of our study and we were discussing chapter 2.
A family friend recorded it for me and for some people who weren’t able to be there but wanted to hear what I had to say. I may post it at some point and if you really are interested, I can send it to you; just message me. I’ll discuss my notes/outline a little bit though.
That verse in 2 Timothy really has become special to me though. On our way to Washington D.C. the day before I testified earlier this year, it was especially on my mind. When I awoke the next day I was much calmer than I anticipated. I discussed that verse more in one of the most viewed posts I’ve done ⬇️; and have since made the image at the top and which was used for the thumbnail. I even put it on a tee shirt.
I’m grateful for the opportunity I had to share a little bit at our study group. Considering the subject matter of the book, it seemed timely to the group leaders to give me about an hour to talk. It’s humbling that they thought they group would benefit from anything I had to say and/or from some of the experiences i’ve had.
I discussed my family a little bit, mostly in the context of what they mean to me and what they mean from a biblical perspective. Some of my favorite verses in those regards are these:
Proverbs 31:10-12 - An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.
Psalm 127: 3-5 - Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
At the end of chapter in our book, Lutzer gives three points that he believes we need to be cognizant of and uphold as we exist in this world trying to fulfill the Great Commission. They are:
1. we must have the courage to stop clapping even when others around us are resentfully obedient to their elite rulers.
2. we must be willing to be vilified even as we speak the truth.
3. you and I have no idea what God will do with our witness.
I agree with Lutzer’s points and am grateful he put them so early in the book. They are a good jumping off point for the rest of the chapters and they have already had personal meaning to me before I even read them.
These points are a direct reflection of 2 Timothy 1:7. If you trust in the Lord, no matter the fear or cowardice that you may have, if you speak the truth even though you are vilified, you will be given the power, love and discipline to be a faithful witness for Christ; and you’ll have no idea how your witness will be used and maybe even spread. I certainly never would have expected the opportunities I have had to share my faith and experiences since being canceled and vilified by the FBI and others.
In regards to tyrants, or evil rulers, the chapter also said, “And the more evil they are the more loyalty they demand from their subjects. There are two things evil leaders crave: power and worship; even grudging worship on the part of the populace is better than no worship at all.” We have seen an explosion of government worship in the last handful of years. Government over God; government as God.
When a government declares their preeminence and forces their control in an ungodly fashion, which we have seen in numerous ways from governments all across the world, we have a duty to hold true to God’s word. When a government forsakes its God-ordained authority by “calling evil good and good evil” (Isaiah 5:20) the Christian is duty bound to point to the truth of Christ; no matter the cost.
When a government says it is “good” to slaughter the pre-born (even using one of Satan’s most powerful tools, deception, by calling it “reproductive healthcare services”), or that it is “good” to affirm a false gender ideology, or that it is “good” to change the “stigma” associated with pedophiles (what the “good” government funded “research” now calls Minor-Attracted Persons; MAPs), or fill in the blank with any number of things, you can be certain that the government is evil. Or at least vast swaths of the government and certainly those handing down the orders. Proverbs 16:12 says, “it is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness.” An abomination.
It is an abomination for the “leaders” of nations to do these things, yet they do. So what do we do? We must stand firm. We must be bold. We must speak the truth. We must not hide. No matter the cost. 2 Timothy 1:7 says God gives us a spirit “of power and love and self-discipline.” We must also love and spread the truth in love. Not always an easy task for a sinner like me. Power and self-discipline sound great, but love…I dunno…especially with how vile some people have been and the lies they have spewed? That might be too much…NO! It must be in love.
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away.” -1 Corinthians 13:4-8
“And now these three things remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” -1 Corinthians 13:13
Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act courageously, be strong. All your actions must be done in love.” -1 Corinthians 16:13-14
“Dear friends, let us love one another, because love is from God, and everyone who loves has been fathered by God and knows God. The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love. By this the love of God is revealed in us: that God sent his one and only Son into the world in order that we may live through him. In this is love: not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.” -1 John 4:7-9
What more could I possibly add; aside from more from Scripture about love? And there is plenty more.
Some other quotes from this week’s chapter that stood out to me were these:
“That’s how collective demonization works; no discussion, no debate regarding whether a person’s views are right or wrong, no opportunity to defend one’s self. You are summarily destroyed; your livelihood, your reputation, and your future are often left in ruins. No civility; you’re just made a victim of targeted destruction.”
“Their rule is simple: amplify the voices we agree with and silence those with whom we disagree. And we get to decide who speaks and who doesn’t.”
“The days ahead will tell whether our freedoms can be preserved or whether they will be destroyed under the guise of keeping us safe from the perceived “enemies within.””
I’ll refrain from going on more of a monologue about my thoughts and experiences pertaining to the chapter any further. Suffice it to say that this study comes at quite a relevant time for me and my family and i’d encourage you to pick up the book and give it a read too.

I am one who is reading that very book and also had the privilege of hearing you share at that study personally. Just another affirmation of Gods plans for you. YOU really are a modern day patriot. Towards the end of that chapter Lutzer also says this: “If you personally are not faced with making a difficult choice IN GOD’S favor, ask HIM to bring someone to mind who MUST make a COSTLY decision to be a faithful witness”. He adds: Thank them for the strength to REFUSE to applaud when commanded to do so”. Thank you for your STRENGTH to “stand firm” AND may GOD continue to give you the strength and artillery to do so. 💪🏻
